As the programs used to create and edit graphics are becoming more sophisticated and offer more functionality, raster graphics are used less and less. The cause of such tendency is another form of graphics - vector graphics which provide a greater flexibility and editing capabilities.
What is vector graphics? How is it different from raster graphics?
- Raster images are made by some small rectangles, called pixels. Each pixel represents a different color. The bad thing about this is that the size of raster graphics is not intended to be changed as they lose quality. If you tried to resize a bitmap, you must have seen how fragmented it becomes.
- Vector graphics are made from various paths that form the various figures and shapes. Accordingly, the size of vector image can be changed without losing quality. Vector graphics are usually saved in formats such as. AI, EPS and SVG.
There are many cases where it is best to use vector graphics instead of raster and we are going to talk about some of them.
- Logo design. If a company is to hire a designer to create a logo, you should always ask for the vector version. Companies often use their logo on posters, business cards, advertising, and, therefore, a lot of different sizes are needed. Vector logo size can be changed very quickly without losing its quality. One can also modify and edit colors of vector file with just a few clicks.
- Huge posters, advertisements. Printing a large poster requires huge images (up to 20, 30 or more million pixels). Increasing the size of raster file this much would make it loose it's detail. Using a vector image does not cause this problem - it will still look great after any kind of resizement.
- One does not now where particular image will be used. If you are not sure yet how you are going to use an image, it would be a better way to have it in vector format. In this case, it would be possible to adjust the image and change its size in the necessary way.
In short, vector graphics offers flexible editing posibilities, almost limitless. This type shows its best when used in web design, logo or any other large sign or advertisement.
If you want to test vectors and and are looking for them, it would be a good idea to visit a gallery of free vectors where you will be able to collect lots of vector graphics for free.
